Driftwood Salon presents: T.W. CHUI; A 35 YR Retrospective

This Friday October 14, 6-10pm

39 ISIS St, (near 12th & Folsom) S.F. CA, 94103

T.W. CHUI: A 35 YEAR RETROSPECTIVE
And the unveiling of the new “DAUGHTER OF KALI” series
October 14th- November 12th, 2011

T.W. Chui grew up in the gang filled streets of Hong Kong, and got a firsthand view of the devastating reality many women in the sex trade industry face every day. Yet even though he has had a rough beginning, he uses every bit of it to transcend and amaze us through his magnificent oils on masonite. By th…e time he was a young adult, he knew he wanted to be an artist, so he moved to San Francisco to pursue a career in art and got offered a full scholarship to San Francisco’s Art Institute. That was about thirty five years ago. Since then he has had a world filled with many advances and awards in the art field, and had been busily painting night and day at his East Bay studio.
I have never seen an audience react to a painting the way they have to Chui’s “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, a radiant 60”X40” oil painting of a beautiful young blond girl, in the nude. There are many contrasting lines and deep groves, it is impossible not to feel the movement. The irresistible texture beckons you to come in for a closer look. Some have lingered over her shining skin that seems lit from within; and some have silently backed away in horror by this creation, which actually tells the tale of a young prostitute, and is just one of many in the new series entitled “The Daughters Of Kali”.
This is the exact reaction that we artists desire; to inspire dialogue as well as emotions in our audience. And that my friends, is the true mastery of T.W. Chui. He has dedicated this newest series to raising awareness to this ongoing world situation, as well as offering it to us in a new “divine” perspective.
Driftwood Salon, in conjunction with Chillin Productions, is extremely proud to present this 35 year retrospective exhibit, featuring more than three decades worth of paintings and drawings by this incredible artist. Please join us for our opening reception on Friday, October 14th, from 6pm-10pm. Special guest DJ: Irene Hernandez-Feiks.
This exhibit will run until Saturday November 12th and there will be a closing reception on that Saturday night as well starting at 6:00 PM. For more information please visit driftwoodsalon.com or twchui.com.
